Developing self-discipline in seven steps
Self-organization and self-discipline are definitely among those things every student needs. How else will you be able to complete all that paper writing and other assignments in time? Self-discipline is like a very special ability that makes your life much better. Once you master it, you will have time for all the important things like coursework writing and reading – and for some fun as well. Here are a few aspects you would want to consider in case you want to bring a little more self-discipline into your life.
Looking for motivation
More often than not, lack of motivation to do something, to start something new is the biggest issue. You’ve probably had this feeling when you look at the blank sheet of paper and just can’t make the first step… so you just put your work off till later. Bad news is trying to ignore a problem won’t make it go away. Your essay writing will not complete itself. Your chores will still be there waiting to get done. So when you do decide to commit yourself to being a more disciplined person, here’s what you’ll need to start with:
– making small steps, one by one, in order to improve your situation;
– trying to make sure that the steps you are taking don’t cause much discomfort;
– gradually moving towards the boundaries of your comfort zone;
– start practicing self-discipline.
Of course, there are other ways to get yourself motivated. Your desire to make a better academic progress is, for example, is a great motivation. Or your wish to have more time for fun and relaxation. Or your desire to get some nice long sleep every night. No matter what your motivation is, it’s a good thing to start.
One of the first things you can do on your way to self-discipline is starting with small steps. It may be scary to work at a big project, so why don’t you divide it into many small and simple steps that will be much easier to complete? This way, a formidable custom research paper won’t seem that hard to complete at all. You’ll definitely feel like a much more disciplined person of you focus on smaller tasks and try to break up large pieces of work into small stages.
Leave your comfort zone
One of the reasons why we try to fight every thought of self-discipline is it makes us feel uncomfortable. We get frightened by the hard tasks we are given and do anything not to leave our cozy cocoon of a comfort zone. So we easily get distracted by things that are well familiar and much nicer, like TV, games or spending hours in social networks. You know this has to stop. So what you have to do is try to make small moves towards the boundaries of your comfort zone and feel it can actually be nice. Do a small task at a time and push yourself beyond your comfort zone bit by bit.
Pay attention to your impulses
While you are on your way to developing perfect self-discipline, you’ll occasionally feel an impulse to give up on a difficult task or put it off till later. This won’t get you far, and it’s possible that you’ll find your assignment is still not ready after a long while. Try to control your impulses and don’t follow them. One of the best ways to do that is setting time for doing a certain task and nothing but it (for example, some part of your research writing). Make it a rule that if you get that impulse to stop it and do something else, you’ll go on working or your task or do nothing at all.
Success and failure are both victories
A big mistake we sometimes make is fretting over mistakes that we make. But in fact, your failure is a small victory too. It means that you’ve tried and you got some experience you will use to your benefit in the future. You’ve learned something. You can do it differently next time. Just keep trying.
There is nothing impossible if you are ready to change something in your life. Just remember that there is no perfection either and allow yourself to make mistakes you will learn from.
