Museo Atlantico is the first underwater contemporary art museum in Europe. An expert on underwater sculptures, artist Jason deCaires Taylor has created a series of sculptural installations that inhabit Museum Atlantico’s ocean floor.

The two installations look like treasures of shipwrecks, frozen in time and space. One of them is not only marvelous and mysterious, but it also comments on the refugee crisis in a moving way. In The Raft of Lampedusa desperate figures wait in a boat for treatment and aid. Influenced by Théodore Géricault’s famous artwork The Raft of the Medusa, the artist hopes to create a powerful reminder of the world’s responsibility on the humanitarian crisis. “The work is not intended as a tribute or memorial to the many lives lost, but as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility of our now global community,” explains the artist.

The Museo Atlantico is located off the coast of the Lanzarote Island and will be open from February 25 to snorkelers and divers.
